Running from Whitewater Falls (highest falls east of the Mississippi), over Rabun Bald (2nd highest point in Georgia) and to scenic Franklin, NC, this 80-mile thru-hike packs in as many highlights-per-mile as any the Eastern US has to offer. This trail works well in either direction, but if hiking from east to west, you’ll begin at the Bad Creek Foothills Trail Access on the Whitewater River. Follow the Foothills Trail along the Chattooga River ridge and valley for 22 miles before reaching the Chattooga River Trail. A 4.5-mile hike along the Chattooga will take you to the great state of Georgia, where you’ll hike the entire 35-mile Georgia section of the Bartram Trail, culminating with 360 degree views from the summit of Rabun Bald. From the GA/NC state line, you’ll continue another 18 miles to Hickory Knoll Road just outside of Franklin, NC. If you hike the FAB 80, please send any links to trail journals, YouTube videos, etc. to mflege@ugata.org so we can share them on this page!
